The questions Australian homeowners ask most often when they are about to get work done, answered without the sales pitch.
What is the difference between a quote and an estimate?
A quote is a fixed-price offer. Once you accept a written quote it becomes a contract, and the final invoice cannot exceed it unless you approve a variation first. An estimate is only an informed projection of what the work is likely to cost. Australian Consumer Law expects an estimate to be made with reasonable skill and care, so the final figure should not land far above it, but an estimate does not lock in a price the way a quote does.
What should a written quote include?
A quote should name the business and its licence number, describe the scope of work in enough detail that you could hold someone to it, list what is excluded, set out payment stages, and give a start and finish window. Exclusions matter as much as inclusions. Most disputes about a final bill come from work each side assumed was covered by a line that never actually said so.
How do I check that a tradie is licensed?
Every state and territory runs a free online licence register: NSW Fair Trading, the VBA in Victoria, the QBCC in Queensland, and their equivalents in WA, SA, Tasmania, the ACT and the NT. Search the licence number on the quote and confirm three things: the licence is active, its class actually covers your type of work, and the name on it matches the business quoting you.
Why do quotes for the same job differ so much?
Usually because they are not quoting the same job. One may include removing and disposing of the old fittings while another leaves it out, one may allow for waterproofing to current standard while another assumes the existing membrane is fine. Different materials, different allowances for the unknown, and different exclusions can move a total a long way. Compare the scope line by line before comparing the totals.
